I have been telling my sons that we are seeing now and that I will live to see the beginning of the impact of Global Warming . Whereas, they will have to have to deal with it most of their life. To which they say: “Oh nice – Thanks Dad”.
Climate Change is a perfect example of prior generations passing the buck down to the next generation. Except that now, the chickens are coming home to roost.
Watch what happens when you get smart teenagers pissed off.
Case in point: Alec Loorz founded “Kids vs. Global Warming” three years ago at the age of 12 after watching Al Gore’s movie, “an Inconvenient Truth”. Alec has composed cool, easy to understand presentations on the impact of Global Warming for the k-12 crowds. To date he has given over 150 presentations and keynote addresses.
Kids vs. Global Warming has a number of young presenters who give presentations in schools, churches, conferences, museums, etc… They have created a Declaration of Independence from Fossil Fuels that has gathered over 50,00o signatures, they organize team activities such as installing poles to measure sea level in coastal communities, tree planting events and build youth leadership capacity with their C3 program.
Kids vs. Global Warming latest initiative is to sue the Federal Government and nine State Governments for failing to protect the planet resources for future generations. See the full details on this initiative in this article written by Claire Thompson published in The Grist.
The motion for preliminary injunction asks the federal government to prepare a national climate recovery plan by March 2012 that caps national CO2 emissions at 2011 levels and, starting in 2013, reduces them by 6 percent each year. More important the venue for the preliminary injunction hearing was moved from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., due to the national significance of the case.
This initiative is particularly refreshing since, for the past year, the Obama administration has totally abandoned any pretense of pursuing any Climate Change legislative agenda. From what I see, the motto seems to be “whatever it takes to get re-elected”. In my opinion, Mr. Obama and his advisers are mostly missing the point. It is not just Economy – this time it is “The Environment Stupid”.
Let’s watch.
