Regular visitors to this blog may have noticed that in the recent past, I have not posted much new materials to this blog. The reason why is that I am getting restless.
More and more evidence is accumulating showing that the polar caps are melting faster than expected.
The
full impact of climate change is going to be blatantly obvious much sooner.
We need to be ready for what is coming and it is pretty obvious to me that this country is not remotely ready.
I decided to take stock of what I have observed over the past three years and see what could be done to move FASTER toward a more Sustainable Society??
What are the key obstacles on the path to a more Sustainable Lifestyle?
Over the past three years, while contributing to the PhillyEcoCity.com blog, I observed how people in the Greater Philadelphia area are taking steps toward making the urban area more sustainable and I noticed the following obstacles:
• People don’t find each other: There is a core group of people passionate about Sustainability who communicate via specific Email Lists and sometimes meet at events, and often never find out about each other’s existence and projects.
• Information all over the place: Access to sustainability related information by the general public requires enough motivation to gather information spread over multiple local and national websites, across media channels and in different meetings.
• Unclear rewards: Information about more sustainable products and behaviors are now reaching the mainstream media. Consumers are slowly engaging and changing their behavior as rewards for a more sustainable life style are not immediate or obvious.
I believe these obstacles exist in most metropolitan areas of the US and of the planet.
What can we do to remove them and accelerate the movement toward more sustainable urban areas?
I propose to use the power of Information Technology to foster SYNERGY among people concerned about or interested in Sustainability.
Synergy is the creative transformation that arises when people combine their energy with easy access to information and resources compounded by clear rewards.
I am proposing to build a framework of inter-related tools that will make up the Sustainability Acceleration Platform that will put Synergy in service of building more sustainable urban areas.
The Sustainability Acceleration Platform is composed of 3 tools:
- A Social Networking/Information Hub
- A Smartphone Application
- A Sustainability Game
Each tools will allow users to interact with the other two tools.
This post is a Call to Action and not a requirements document for each of the tools I defined above, hence I will not define each tool in more details.
