I joked with some friends the other day that I feel that urban farmers are like Alice, and Philadelphia is like our wonderland. Yes, the urban farming scene in this city is one of the most robust, innovative and exciting in the country. However, the white rabbits that urban farmers continuously need to chase down [...]

Three years after the near collapse of global financial markets, America is still struggling with unemployment, debt, and foreclosure, European governments are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy—and the world’s billionaires are getting richer faster than ever before. The current situation is not sustainable. But what changes need to be made to overcome this mounting [...]

    Move Your Money!

What: For those of us angry at the Big Banks, now’s the time to pull our money from them. A national movement called Bank Transfer Day suggests that we do so on or before November 5th – next Saturday. If you have accounts with any of these banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, PNC, Citizens, TD Bank or Sovereign), members of Occupy Philly & Transition Philadelphia would like to assist You, the 99%, to Move Your Money out of these Big Banks on Tuesday Nov 1st.

If you can’t come into Center City on Tuesday, you can still go to Move Your Money’s website to Find a Bank or Credit Union convenient to you, open new accounts, and close accounts with the Big Banks. And please, send us your stories! Let our combined actions speak for all of us!

How: Anyone who wants to close their bank account is welcome to join us as we walk to nearby branches of the above banks and Close Our Accounts. Welcome also are Friends who can explain the Move Your Money project and Bank Transfer Day to passersby and the media. Several local credit unions and banks are expected to be present, for informational purposes.

Where: Transition Philadelphia’s table AKA the Environment table, outside Occupy Philadelphia’s white Outreach tent, 15th & Market, Philadelphia PA 19102

    When: Tue 11/1/2011 @ 11am

Why: The Transition movement is all about relocalizing our Economy. What better way than to Bring our Money Home, available for re-investment right here, in Our Communities, to Serve Our Needs?

Join us 4pm Tuesday, Nov 1 for Stories of our Future. Bill Mettler will lead the group for story-sharing and visioning at Occupy Philadelphia. We will be at Transition Philadelphia’s table (AKA the Environment table) outside Occupy Philadelphia’s white Outreach tent. When we get cold, we plan on walking the 2 blocks to the Friends Center, where we can warm up and continue with the story sharing and getting to know each other. This will be a great opportunity for members of Transition Philadelphia to meet with our new friends from Cheltenham.

    Hi folks,

An update from Philly Occupy: Robyn Mello from Philly Food Forests is on the ground and working hard as part of the Education group at Philly Occupy. Her goal is to hold a 3pm slot open every day for workshops pertaining to sustainable practices, growing food, permaculture, alternative currencies, etc. Other time slots are also available.

If you would like to offer to teach at City Hall on any related topics, please contact her at: 609-828-0289. We would love to see the permaculture community be a part of educating Philadelphia at the ground level!

    Thanks,
    ~Joy

    Hey everyone,
About a year ago you may have heard me talk about trying to bring an Earthship Green house to the Wood land cemetery. Well, that never quite worked out. However, the idea has resurfaced, this time in our backyard in Kensington at Emerald St. Urban Farm. Starting next Friday Oct. 14th and hopefully ending Monday Oct. 17th, we will be building a self heating and cooling greenhouse using Earthship techniques.

An Earthship is an amazing design for a completely system-contained, self-sufficient house. It was developed in Taos New Mexico in the 70’s by Michael Reynolds. And over the years the design has become more and more refined. For more info, please check out http://www.earthships.org.

There is currently a race to develop the first Urban Earthship. New York is ahead of us and their Earthship is underway. Although it’s being built as a skyscraper, using some very mind blowing techniques (Like reflecting mirrors that pass solar power down the building) it’s being built as a private residence for a very wealthy person. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that. But the company in Philly, LoveLovingLove, headed by Rashida Ali-Campbell is focusing Philly’s urban earthship efforts on addressing low income housing and community sustainability. Their prototype will act as a non-profit embassy to show people how to build earthships.

And this greenhouse project will be a great first step in showing how the techniques are done and hopefully raise awareness to Rashida’s efforts. So not only do we need people for the build, but we also need people to help collect materials. We need about 60 tires (which are easy to find in Kensington). So please bring them by the farm if you find them and want to get rid of them. We also need 500 2-liter plastic bottles. I went out last night on trash night by myself and probably got about 75. So if other people can gather them from their hoods on recycle night, then we can easily get to 500. Also, I plan to go out next wed. and would love some volunteers to each take a street with me. I think that would put us over the edge.

    So once again:
Oct. 14-17 is the build. We will need people pounding dirt into tires to make bricks and people cutting bottles to make walls.
Wed. Oct. 12th at 10 PM we meet at my house, 2312 Emerald St. to collect bottles
Ongoing: Please drop off any plastic bottles or tires to Emerald St. Urban Farm

Please email me if you want to take part.
