Thank you for the suggestion of offering a cold bottle of water along with a bag of recovered rubber bands to my letter carrier.
That is an awesome suggestion.

:)

Thanks

Hello, As a mail clerk I feel i have to weigh in, in my office rubber bands are more often than not brought back. I see carriers put them into the bags on their case to be used again. That being said, have you ever had a rubber bans snap on you, hitting your skin and leave a mark? Try having that happen multiple times, because you are forced to reuse rubber bands. Yes the Postal Service is in finiancial difficulties, but the facts show that most of our money is going to Congress. How about focusing on that and keeping people in work, instead of this? In my area alone, we clerks have all had our hours cut by 10-15 hours a week, but are required to do more and more work. Offices are being shut down and people are losing their once considered "secure" jobs? What if we were to just pick them up and give them back? Leave them in your mailbox with a nice note (and perhaps a cold bottle of water {sealed drinks only :-)} on a hot day) both acts are small ways to show appreciation for the service and will long be remembered.

Great article, Nic. I've always held the view that property owners shouldnt be able to simply sit on land for as long as they please, until the market suits them, or until their particular financial situations improve. To purchase any of these lots from this future land bank, the buyers should be required to present plans for the spaces, and the plans must be executed and completed within a specific time frame. It would ensure that the land is being used and not just left to rot with no opportunity for activity. To promote and protect gardening interests, certain properties deemed most ideal for farming/communal spaces/parks should be set aside by the city/purchased by the city specifically for those purposes. Every time a Philadelphia politician uses the word "Greene City Towne" or quotes William Penn's ideal model for the city, which included open green spaces every few blocks, they should be forced to set aside a new space for that purpose. Schoolyards should be forced to become green spaces. Neighborhood Improvement Districts should be set up everywhere to collect taxes specifically for neighborhood improvements like this. The answers arent always about playing nice, but theyre not necessarily crazy either. Baby steps, I suppose....
