First podcast: Torbjorn Lahti, the planner for Sweden’s first eco-municipality – speaking in Philadelphia

Torbjörn Lahti has been working on building sustainable communities in Sweden for the past 25 years.
He is co-author of The Natural Step for Communities: How Cities and Towns Can Change to Sustainable Practices (New Society Publishers, 2004). with Sarah James.

Currently, he is the project director for Sustainable Robertsfors, a five-year sustainable community demonstration project located in Northern Sweden. He was the project planner for Sweden’s first eco-municipality, Övertorneå. Torbjörn was also instrumental in the creation of “SeKom”, the Swedish national association of eco-municipalities. He travels the world helping municipalities in Europe, Latin America, Canada, the United States and Africa to become a 100% fossil fuel free.

This is PhillyEcoCity first podcast.

Julia Hoff, a Drexel University Film Department student recorded the entire session with Torbjörn and the members of the Board of Sustainable Mount Airy (SMA) and edited it. Because of Julia’s careful editing and canceling of background noise, I learned more from listening to Torbjörn’s conversation with SMA on this podcast than during the actual event. Thank you Julia for making this possible.

In my experience, Torbjörn is a humble, low key man – intensely personal. What makes this recording unique is that after a half hour presentation, a conversation emerges between a group of committed activists struggling with the question of “HOW DO WE START?” and one of the most experienced person worldwide on the subject of moving to a sustainable community.
