Farm To Philly
The food we eat is a metaphor for our life style. According to the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, the national Weighted Average Source Distance (WASD) for conventional food is 1,494 miles. The WASD for locally grown food is 56 miles.
Food transportation also contributes to global warming, because of the huge quantities of fuel used for transportation. A typical meal bought from a conventional supermarket chain – including some meat, grains, fruit and vegetables – consumes four to 17 times more petroleum for transport than the same meal using local ingredients.
Philadelphia has a growing community of people passionate about sourcing their food locally, whether through a CSA or from one of the many farmer’s markets in the area.
The blog FarmtoPhilly.com is the place on the web the find out more about locally grown food, Philadelphia area farmer’s markets and CSAs.

You can find a used bike for $50. Considering that a Septa charges $4 for a bus ride, it only takes 12 to 13 Septa rides to cover the price of a used bike. Since the Philadelphia area is made of neighborhoods and small villages, one more reason to walk or bike around.
Want to find out how walkable is the neighborhood you live in or work at??
I suggest you use the web based WalkScore tool.
